Petition to Legislative Leaders to Make Utah Attorney General a Non-Partisan Office

Petition to Legislative Leaders to Make Utah Attorney General a Non-Partisan Office

The following petition to Speaker Brad Wilson and President Adams is being proposed by the United Utah Party:

Utah's Attorney General has been the subject of scrutiny for possible corruption for the past 20 years.  The past two occupants and the current occupant of the office repeatedly have been accused of catering to large Republican campaign donors.  As well, the current incumbent has failed to investigate potential violations of state law and policy.  For example, the Attorney General has not investigated recent instances of government contracts being made outside of the normal contracting processes.  Also, they include Attorney General Reyes' failure to investigate whether Governor Herbert violated the law in offering an inducement to a GOP gubernatorial primary candidate to withdraw from the race and endorse the governor's favored candidate.  Repeatedly, Attorney General Reyes has failed to investigate those of his own political party.

Therefore, we the undersigned, believe Utah's Attorney General should be above political party and call on you to initiate a constitutional amendment making the office of Utah Attorney General non-partisan - an office to be elected by the voters in a non-partisan election rather than through a political party nomination process.
