A Party in the Toddler Stage

A Party in the Toddler Stage

I have a 16 month old granddaughter who is learning to walk. Right now, she walks like she is leaving a bar after too many drinks. And she falls down a lot.

But she gets better day by day—more steady, more sure of herself, and able to walk further. And when she falls down, she always, always gets back up and tries again. She is determined to succeed at this walking thing.

As I am sure you are aware, this note is not about my granddaughter, as cute as she is. It is about drawing a parallel. One that we can apply as adults.

The question I pose is how much, as adults, are we are willing to keep trying when the task is not easy. How many of us give up after a few attempts, concluding that it is not possible?

The United Utah Party is like my granddaughter. We are still in the toddler stage. We are trying to walk—to make people aware of the new alternative they have, gain support across the state, change the way people think about parties and politics, elect candidates who will govern wisely rather than as ideologues, modify policy to end the excessive polarization that cripples our nation, and reform our government in behalf of the citizens.

It is easy to conclude, as some people have already, that since we did not win any elections last year, that means we never can. That is like saying that because my granddaughter wobbles and falls down a lot she will never be able to learn to walk.

I was talking to a prominent political operative in the state a couple of months ago. He had recorded a podcast that was positive towards us. He told me that we would succeed—if we kept trying and didn't give up.

That is the message for us. Keep trying. Don't give up. Don't judge us as a full grown political party that should have already won elections and automatically become competitive with the two major parties. Judge us like my granddaughter. We are still trying. And if we continue to do so, we will succeed.

Go to unitedutah.org and volunteer and donate. And share this message with others who you know are dissatisfied with politics as usual and want an alternative!

UUP Fundraiser: Meet Evan McMullin

The UUP will hold its 1st Annual Uniter Golden Spike Award Fundraiser on Wednesday, November 6th at the Alta Club in Salt Lake City. The 2019 Honoree is Evan McMullin, former 2016 independent presidential candidate.

Evan is Utah native, former CIA officer, investment banker and House Foreign Affairs Senior policy analyst. Evan and his 2016 vice presidential running mate, Mindy Finn, co-founded Stand Up Republic.

The UUP is pleased to give Evan an award for his work "to grow a community of Americans to defend democratic ideals, norms and institutions." More information on ticket purchases will be forthcoming.

Term Limits: How YOU Can Help

Signature gathering for the Unite 4 Term Limits Initiative is moving forward! In August, we held seven hearings in regions across Utah. Soon thereafter, we were given the green light by the state elections office to start gathering signatures. In September, we spent time recruiting volunteers, printing and distributing petition packets and more. Now, we are going forward full-steam, gathering as many signatures as possible as we race to get the required amount before the February 2020 deadline.

It's no secret that this is going to be a monumental task to complete. We have wonderful volunteers helping make this a reality, but we will need all hands on deck in order to get term limits on the ballot in 2020. Polling shows clearly that if the initiative gets the number of required signatures that Utah voters will likely support the initiative with a powerful majority. But if that's going to happen, then we need to get the initiative on the ballot today.

Want to help us make this a reality? There are two big ways that you could help us.

One is to donate. We have wonderful volunteers who are doing a great job collecting signatures. But with more than 115,000 required signatures to gather all over the state, we will likely need to supplement our volunteers with paid signature gatherers. These gatherers could quickly help us reach that ultimate goal, but the clock is ticking. If you could donate today, we'd be one step closer to bringing this initiative home.

Second is to give of your time, and become a signature gatherer yourself. We have regional coordinators all over the state with packets who can help make sure that you can add your help to the effort. If 500 people were able to gather 250 signatures each for us over the next couple of months, we could reach our required signature thresholds. Even if you can only gather a few signatures from friends, family, and neighbors, every little bit helps. Please consider volunteering as a signature gatherer today.

We are so grateful for everybody's help on this process so far. We still have a high mountain to climb, but if you could help us in one or both of these ways today, we can make it happen!

County Conventions Happening Now

Bring your energy to one of our county conventions!  Weber and Cache Counties will have conventions this Saturday. Come show your support at these conventions and help make a difference in your community!

The purpose of these conventions is to elect county officers, help party supporters get to know each other, and work together to build the party in the county.  We invite to our county conventions anyone interested in a new alternative to the dysfunctional Republicans and Democrats. Come join us in building a new political system built on moderation, common sense, and practicality.  You will find other like-minded people who want to end the partisan gridlock that dominates today's politics.

United Utah county conventions are open to the public. However, only those who are registered members of the party can vote on party business at the convention. For those not already UUP members, voter registration can be done in advance at vote.utah.gov or at the door.

Check your calendars.

A Personal Invite to the Utah County Convention

From Christine Heath, Interim Utah County Chair

Utah County Convention is right around the corner!

This is a great opportunity to get involved with politics at the local level.  At the convention we will be electing County Officers and Legislative District Chairs.  Utah County will be getting a new County Chair since I will be stepping down to run for office in 2020, but before I go, there are some exciting things happening at convention. Three of our dedicated volunteers will receive the Golden Spark Award. The award is handmade, with love, because we love our volunteers.

Studies have shown that coloring can reduce stress, and in these political times, who couldn’t use a little relaxation?  Anyone who donates a dollar or more will receive a United Utah Party Coloring page as a thank you. Swag will also be available with larger donations.

If you are a Precinct Chair, or would like to be a Precinct Chair, we have a new handbook to help you be extraordinary!  A few copies will be at convention, and you will receive a digital copy, provided we have the correct contact information.

As many of you know, the United Utah Party is sponsoring a ballot initiative for term-limits.  There will be an opportunity to sign the initiative at convention.

And most important, the convention will be a chance to connect with like minded people. Invite your friends, or just come and meet new ones. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Mark your calendars!
